Subject: APPROPRIATE WORK ATTIRE AND PERSONAL
PROPERTY FOR ALL EMPLOYEES
Effective August 1, 1997, the following appropriate work attire for all employees regardless if they are custody staff, non-uniform staff, or off duty staff will be strictly enforced. All employees are expected to dress so as not to be revealing, provocative, offensive, or distracting to other employees or to resemble inmates. All staff members are reminded that we are in a prison setting and that they should dress accordingly. The object of these guidelines is to ensure the safety and security of inmates, and staff, and to prevent the possibility of escape.
- NO CLOTHING RESEMBLING INMATE ATTIRE! (Which are blue denim jeans and blue chambray shirts and/or white T-shirt.)
- NO running shorts or other athletic type clothing, (regardless of gender)
- NO blue denim material of any kind
- NO blue chambray shirts.
- NO sweat suits, including designer, will be permitted.
- NO transparent clothing.
- NO thongs, shower shoes, or slippers. Shoes are to have a minimum a strap around the heel; unless medically exempted (you may have to run in an emergency).
- NO shirts with offensive logos.
- NO head covering or hats that display logos, writings, or pictures pertaining to violence, sex, gang activity, drugs, profanity, alcohol, or anything that would affect the safety and security of the institution.
- NO state issued scrubs
Allowable Employee Property
All staff may possess one of each of the following items listed below within the security perimeter of the institution and/or perimeter towers:
- Lunch Box or Igloo Type Cooler - approximately 16" long, 14" wide, and 12" high.
- Thermos/Water Bottles - one-quart maximum capacity. During institutional emergencies or when staff is assigned to isolated posts, the Warden may approve exceptions to the aforementioned requirements.
- Brief/Attaché Cases (excluding state issued) (as required per job specifications for managers, supervisors and professional classifications including job stewards) approximately 18" long 6" wide, and 14" high
- Handbag/Purse - (for ancillary staff only) approximately 14" long, 8" wide, and 12" high. Umbrellas (during inciement weather) - compact models only. Golf/Beach umbrellas and / or pointed end umbrellas shall not be allowed.
- Umbrellas shall be stored in such a manner to preclude loss, theft, or access by inmates.
All containers (brief/attaché cases, ice chests, lunch boxes, purses, bags, etc.) and their contents shall be visually inspected upon entering and/or exiting the institution.
Personal Pager/Cellular Telephones (excluding state issued, i.e., Administrative Officer of the Day, Special Emergency Response Team, etc.) are not authorized within the institution inner security perimeter or on the job site at the institution. The only exception will be those personally authorized by the Warden, in writing.
All supervisors, control staff, second floor sallyport officer, and the front entrance officer, vehicle sallyport officer(s), or the outside patrol sergeant under the supervision of the watch commander shall be responsible for compliance to the above restrictions and are expected to enforce these guidelines. Area supervisors will be held accountable for staff in their immediate work area.
All State employees, including off duty personnel, will be required to adhere to these guidelines. Employees found to be in non-compliance will be required to return home for appropriate attire, and on their time.
The following items are not authorized within the institution inner security perimeter nor on the job site at CMF.
- Personal Pocket Knives/Pen Knives (regardless of blade length).
- Duffel/Gym Bags/Back Packs, Extra Clothing (excluding rain gear, jackets and/or coats).

Subject: PERSONALLY OWNED ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT
All staff and managers are reminded that personally owned electronic equipment, such as computers, personal pagers, and cellular phones, are not permitted inside the California Medical Facility.
The only exception to this directive are those members of the staff who are required to carry "state" issued pagers in the performance of the their job duties, such as M.O.D.'s, A.O.D's, S.E.R.T's, N.M.T's, selected supervisors, and managers.
Unit mangers are responsible for providing necessary equipment for employees' use when performing their usual and customary duties. Telephones are provided on job sites for staff use in their official duties. These telephones are also available for emergency personal use by staff after approval by the Watch Commander or your immediate supervisor.
If any staff member feels they have a sufficient and valid reason for carrying a personal pager during work hours while inside the institution, they must put their request in writing for my review, and final approval.
