Wellness and Recovery Planning Team
Following admission to Napa State Hospital, members of each individual’s Wellness and Recovery Planning Team meet with the individual to develop a wellness and recovery plan designed to meet specific, individual needs. Once developed, the plan is reviewed regularly by the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team to assess the individual’s progress and to revise the plan as appropriate.
Parents, guardians, conservators, CONREP and family play a significant role in the individual’s care and in providing important information to the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team. These individuals are encouraged to participate and give input at all Wellness and Recovery Planning Team Conferences.
Treatment Programs
Program 1 - Forensic / ICF Services
Program 1 provides mental health services for forensic individuals, and for non-forensic individuals who are under conservatorship and require a secure treatment setting. Individuals are both male and female adults, ambulatory, and age 18 or above. Program 1 units include T5, T6, T7, T8 and Q3/4. Units T5 and T6 are "open" units serving those individuals who have displayed an assessed level of responsibility and/or are preparing for community re-entry.
Treatment services in Program 1 are based on the Wellness and Recovery Treatment Model that encourages and motivates individuals to advance in treatment. Mall Treatment services are provided both on and off units, and occur throughout the secured treatment area. Services include:
Each individual develops Wellness and Recovery Action Plans (WRAP), previously known as Relapse Prevention Plans - focuses on the identification of problem behaviors, the development of replacement/acceptable behaviors, social responsibility and independent living skills. Treatment includes social skills, substance abuse therapy groups, forensic issues groups and discharge planning in conjunction with CONREP services.
Social Independence Program - focuses on the needs of individuals with moderate psychiatric and/or behavior problems. This service provides a highly structured and supportive living environment to enhance social and independent skills development, and the development of adaptive/replacement behaviors.
Program 2 - Forensic
Program 2 provides person centered treatment services in alignment with the Recovery Model to meet the unique needs of adult men and women who reside on the units. Most individuals are admitted under PC 1026, PC 2972, PC 1370, and LPS Conservatorship legal commitments. The program consists of six locked units. T-1 is an all male unit and has a specialized treatment wing for individuals suffering from polydipsia (intoxication resulting from excess drinking of fluids). Q-11, T-3 and T-17 are co-ed units. Unit T-3 is the admission unit for PC 1026, PC 1610 and PC 2972 individuals. T-4 is a unit for older men and women with ages ranging from 40 to 80 years of age. T-18 is the geriatric forensic unit for individuals over the age of 55.
Program 3 - Forensic
Program 3 provides forensic focused treatment services, based upon the Recovery Model, to individuals primarily admitted under Penal Code 1026 or 2972. Program 3 has two all male locked units; two co-ed locked units; one all male open unit; and one co-ed open unit. In collaboration with the University of California at Davis, Forensic Psychiatry, Program 3 has opened a Forensic Clinical Demonstration/Research Unit and has begun conducting research on predictors of violence. The Program also provides specialized treatment services to individuals who have committed sexual offenses.
The goal of treatment services is to help individuals control violent behaviors and assist them in effectively dealing with the forensic issues surrounding their commitment. Individuals also work on developing socially responsible behaviors, independent living skills and comprehensive Wellness and Recovery plans for their mental illness, forensic issues and if applicable substance abuse issues. Services include an emphasis on Substance Recovery education, recovery-directed skills development, vocational services, job skills development, leisure and recreation skills development and individual and group psychotherapy. The Wellness and Recovery Planning Teams work closely with the Conditional Release Program (CONREP) towards returning individuals to the community under CONREP supervision.
Program 4 -Acute Psychiatric, Skilled Nursing (SNF), & Intermediate Care Facility (ICF)
Program 4 serves individuals on LPS and some forensic commitments. The Program includes eight residential units with three levels of care: two Acute Psychiatric units, one Skilled Nursing (SNF) unit, and five Intermediate Care (ICF) units.
Unit A-3 (Acute Psychiatric) serves individuals with more serious physical or complicated diagnostic conditions that cannot be managed on non-medical psychiatric units. Unit A-9 accepts new admissions and provides acute psychiatric care to both male and female individuals. Unit A-4 (Skilled Nursing) provides care for individuals with multiple medical, as well as psychiatric problems. Long term care is given to individuals with long standing and progressive debilitating conditions such as Huntington’s Chorea. The population ranges from young adults to gero-psychiatric, a large number of whom are non-ambulatory. A special milieu is provided for gero-psychiatric and ambulatory individuals on one part of the ICF unit A-2. The other part of this unit provides treatment services, adaptive equipment/resources and comprehensive integrity services to the deaf and hard of hearing individuals.
Three ICF units for males: A-7, A-8 and A-10, and one ICF unit for females, A-1, serves individuals who manifest episodes of inadequately controlled behavior. These units provide a highly structured treatment environment for re-socialization in preparation for an open treatment setting or community placement. A-10 contains a sub-unit for Polydypsia individuals.
Program 5 - Forensic
Program 5 provides specialized rehabilitation, education, and psychiatric services for male individuals committed under the legal classification Penal Code 1370, Incompetent to Stand Trial. Treatment provided is based on the principles of psychiatric rehabilitation and recovery.
The primary focus of treatment is to assist individuals in attaining trial competency and return them to court for further disposition of pending charges. The Wellness and Recovery Planning Team provides a comprehensive trial competency program which includes sponsor groups and competency groups geared toward teaching trial competency information, a written competency assessment test, an opportunity to participate in Mock Trial, which simulates a competency court hearing, and dispositional staffing. In addition, individuals participate in a wide range of mental health groups and therapeutic activities to assist in addressing symptoms and behaviors that may interfere with their ability to understand the court proceedings and to cooperate with their attorney in preparing a defense.
