Philosophy of The Music Therapy Program

Music therapy is scientific application of music to influence changes in disability or behavior. Both group and individual sessions include the use of music to assess and treat various diagnosis and specific clinical features found in the psychiatric forensic patient. Music therapy offers habilitation of cognitive, physical, and psycho-social functions to promote the patient's fullest potential.

Sample Music Therapy Treatment Goals

improve insight and expression of feelings dealing with
problem areas;

develop healthy self-esteem and promote a feeling of
accomplishment via successful musical experiences;

increase concentration, thought organization, and reality
orientation through structured musical tasks;

improve interpersonal skills, trust in others, and a positive
attitude toward treatment through shared musical experiences;

reduce anxiety and promote relaxation through music;

improve impulse control through group experiences;

increase self expression, spontaneity, and creativity.

Student Entering Skill Level Expectations

Applicants must have had exposure to adult psychiatric patients and/or prison inmates. Field work in these areas is desirable. The applicant must have functional music skills in a portable instrument such as a guitar or autoharp. S/he must be familiar with a wide variety of musical forms and styles. The applicant must have good written and verbal communication skills. S/he must be able to formulate objectives and be knowledgeable in structuring group sessions.
