Atascadero State Hospital in affiliation with Schools of Pharmacy at University of Southern California, University of California at San Francisco and University of the Pacific, offers 6 and 12-week clinical rotations to fourth-year pharmacy students. Students are actively involved in interdisciplinary teams which provides them with an opportunity to improve their skills in areas of psychiatric disorders, psychopharmacology, medication monitoring, patient interviewing, interactions with other health care professionals, and small group communications.

In addition, students are expected to answer drug information requests, participate in the hospital's clozapine clinic, assess adverse drug reactions, and attend colloquium and psychopharmacology seminars offered by the hospital. Specialized treatment programs have been developed that give the student an opportunity to pursue areas of interest: drug abuse, neuropsychiatric disorders, ethnic projects, family treatment programs, independent living, sex-related crimes, and trial competency.
