Atascadero State Hospital is one of the largest forensic mental health facilities in the world. The hospital specializes in the treatment of adult male psychiatric patients and is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations.

Training and professional education programs, which enhance professional skills and competence, are provided by the hospital on a continuous basis. Opportunities for physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, pharmacists, rehabilitation therapists, social workers, nurses, and psychiatric technicians to meet all or most of their continuing educational requirements are provided onsite through attendance at bimonthly colloquia and case conferences and special workshops which cover pertinent topics presented by locally and nationally known experts.

As a forensic training center, Atascadero State Hospital provides educational experience to students and interns as well. These include:

Rehabilitation Therapy Internship Programs

Atascadero State Hospital offers clinical internships for students within the disciplines of Dance Movement Therapy, Music Therapy and Recreation Therapy. The program offers students the opportunity to learn techniques and skills required of practicing therapists in the above disciplines in order to meet the professional standard of competency required by the respective professional organizations and universities. Because the program is an approved internship site, it prepares students for certification/registration in the respective national or state professional organizations. The internship is designed to support the overall development of students and addresses entry-level performance responsibilities outlined by each discipline.
