Institution for Mental Diseases (IMD)
Background
The Department of Mental Health (DMH) developed this list of Institution for Mental Disease (IMD) facilities according to the definition in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Manual 4390 and Title 9, California Code of Regulations, Section 1810.222.1. The purpose of this list is to clarify for all interested parties which facilities are considered IMDs (by definition) and to remind all providers not to inappropriately bill Medi-Cal for ancillary services provided to Medi-Cal beneficiaries ages 22 to 64 residing in an IMD as previously specified in DMH Letter 10-02 . This list will be updated annually in January, and more frequently, if determined necessary.
Please note that this list is not exhaustive, nor does this list relieve county mental health departments of any responsibility to check federal definitions to ensure there are not additional IMDs within their jurisdiction.
For questions about this list, or to notify DMH of a change in a facility’s IMD status, please contact Carla Minor at carla.minor@dhcs.ca.gov or (916) 653-5939.
