The California AIDS Project developed to provide counseling and mental health services to people affected by HIV/AIDS. The DMH contracts with counties and non-profit organizations to counsel people who are HIV/AIDS positive, at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS, and their partners, family members, or care providers.
Currently, fourteen agencies
contract with the state DMH to provide mental health and referral services for anybody needing support for HIV/AIDS and related concerns. Some counties provide direct mental health services and some subcontract with private non-profit organizations in their region.
The California AIDS Project, originally established with a $1.5 million allocation through the Budget Act
of 1988, and matched by Ryan White AIDS funding. Program funding has remained constant since the program’s inception. The California Department of Health Services Office of AIDS offers additional services and
