The mission of the Office of Multicultural Services is to strengthen the Department of Mental Health’s focus and ability to provide culturally and linguistically competent mental health services to the diverse population of California.

Objectives:

  • Establish a system that delivers services in a culturally sensitive manner to consumers that are receiving service in California’s Mental Health Plans and State Hospitals.

  • Coordinate the development of a Department Cultural Competence Plan and its integration into department policies, program requirements and regulations.

  • Provide program oversight for the implementation of Mental Health Plan Cultural Competence Requirements contained in the Implementation Plan for Consolidation of Specialty Mental Health Services.

  • Establish a Task Force to serve as an advisory body to the Office of Multicultural Services.

  • Support development of guidelines for linguistic standards and a "needs assessment" for linguistic services.

  • Identify and promote cultural competence training programs to enhance staff ability in providing culturally appropriate service.

  • Collaborate with state hospital staff in developing strategies to assess culturally competent programs at California’s State Hospitals.
