Benefits − Health, Dental, and Vision Coverage
COBRA (Consolidate Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act):
Upon separation, health, dental, and vision coverage for employees and dependents may continue by applying for Consolidate Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) continuation coverage. COBRA allows employees and their dependents to receive the same coverage from the same providers for 18 months. Under COBRA, the employee pays the full monthly premium (employer and employee share), plus a 2 percent administrative charge directly to the plan carrier.
Upon separation from state service, Human Resources will contact you to provide the necessary information and paperwork to apply for COBRA coverage. You, the employee, will have 60 days from the date of separation to enroll in COBRA.
Retirement:
Another option that may be available to you if you meet the age and service requirements is retirement. If you retire within 120 days of being laid off, you will qualify for continued health coverage. You may still be required to pay some or all of the premium, depending on your years of vesting in state service, but you will not have to pay the 2 percent administrative fee that is required under COBRA. Make an appointment to discuss your options with CalPERS at www.calpers.ca.gov
